More UWW woes...will they ever end? (by two anons)

There have been articles within the Royal Purple in the past few months that indicates that students here at Whitewater are having to pay hidden fees when it comes to classes. I myself haven't really taken notice to this until this semester. The hidden fees that I am talking about are the fees that come once you've already handed the University your left arm and right leg. You'll get to all of your classes during the first week of the semester and your professor hands you your course syllabus and within that document are a list of books, materials, or subscriptions that you have to sign up for. More recently, I've had to sign up for ITBE 280 and a Website Development course. For my ITBE 280 class I had to purchase a book that cost roughly $80.00 and then the license for the website that cost about $60.00. That's $140.00 that I didn't pay within my tuition and that I didn't know I had to pay. To add more icing to the cake, I also have to purchase a subscription to a tutorial website for a Website Development class. The subscription will be at a discounted student price (roughly 20% off) but it will still be between $45-$90.

Side note: If I am here at this University to be taught by professors, why do they insist on me getting a subscription to a tutorial website that will teach me how to make a website instead of them teaching me themselves? I just pissed away a couple of thousands of dollars on tuition just to sit in the same room as them, but they don't want to teach me so they're having a website teach me? I could have just as easily of bought the cheaper subscription and taught myself and received no credits than having to pay both fees. But that's just how lazy some professors are I suppose...

Back to the main topic, it's really made me 'critically pissed' at the fact that I have to pay all of this money on tuition, housing, meal plans, etc and THEN I have to purchase all of these hidden requirements just so I can earn a measly 16 credits. Thanks Whitewater for the hidden fees, I guess I didn't want to save my money anyway.

Sincerely pissed,
Anonymous

********************************

The reasons why I came to Whitewater was that I would love it here being on the bowling team and going to school to be a teacher which can land me a job anywhere in the US. Little did I know that I would end up having a few days of just plain irritation on campus whether it be a not so great professor, the class not being very up to date, and the college of education not being helpful at all!  So, what is the point of people here getting paid when they either don’t want to do their job or don’t know how to do their job here on Whitewater’s campus? I have a class that I absolutely hate just for the simple fact that the professor won’t hand out a syllabus or put it up on D2L. Isn’t that their job or is that just a nice thing that all of my other professors have given me up until this semester with this specific professor?

Besides that irritation, what is the point of taking a different class that I have this semester when every assignment I do hasn’t been updated, so therefore it is wrong. I am getting so annoyed when I have to figure out how to do something I have never done before by myself. For example, rather than saying file then print on the instructions it will say print and then later on say you have to do file then print. When your whole class is like that and you have to make time out of your day to take a stupid class that has all the instructions wrong wouldn’t it piss you off too?

Lastly, why is it that last Spring, when I went into Winther Hall to try to change my major  they tell me to go to the third floor, and that lady tells me to go back down to the second floor where I was at the first time. So they tell me this time to go to another lady on the third floor again and when I get there the lady says she can’t help me and that I need to go back home and research what I want to change my major to. Well I already had done that, so I filled out the major change form after talking to the history department and found out that yeah I would have been turned away last year without help, and they had no reason for why. I turned that in but I still have my entire folder from the history department with all my information on my major requirements. Well I asked why my major on D2L hasn’t been changed this spring semester, after a year, and Winther Hall could only tell me that they might have lost my major change slip because they moved recently. A friend of mine later that day told me that her friend works for them and it’s just that they are backed up on paper work could be the possibility.

So with all this happening in one week at school, wouldn’t you be annoyed with some of the professors here that aren’t willing to give you a syllabus, or that aren’t willing to update their class information, or the college of education not caring about what they are supposed to be getting paid to do?  With these reasons, something should be done to increase of the quality of our education.

  1. You appear to be a student who just bitches a lot. So you have a bad class this semester. So what? Shit happens. This is not Mecca or Paradise, its a fairly large and complex organization with good and bad professors, the same stories are told at other institutions.

In your first paragraph you stated that ONE prof did not give you a syllabus and in the last paragraph you stated that SOME of the profs do not give out syllabus. Which is it, one or some. The majority of profs here give out syllabus or have them online. Have you gotten off your complaining ass and asked the prof for a copy of the syllabus? Go to his office hours and insist on a copy of the syllabus instead of bitching and complaining. Be proactive instead of reactive. Get off your ass and do something about the problem.

Education is a popular degree here and they are backed up. Stop bitching so much. You probably did not bitch when you were able to obtain costly textbook per text book rental. If you do not like it here, then get the hell out. So what if you have to teach yourself in a class. At least your ass is in a fairly decent college, so make the best of it.

  2. @ the new Prof Chaos -
Please, before you comment next time, check out a dictionary and try replacing your excessive usage of "bitch" and "ass". You may think you sound awesome or whatever, but you don't. You sound like someone who likes to do just the thing you ridicule others for. So stop. Or at least be a little more creative. Anyone can do what you do, so bring something more to the table than your petty verbiage and empty remarks.

On that note - I must sympathize with the OP. I myself have never experienced such "hidden fees" before, but I have been given the run around by people in the financial aid offices, not to mention I had a terrible experience with first year advising, but that's a whole other story. With that said, there will be problems wherever one goes. Luckily, we have Critically Pissed to help get out our frustrations and bring more awareness to these kinds of issues.

    1. Oh you have paid hidden fees alright, you just did not know it. If you have taken an online class, then you paid hidden fees. Check it out, you are assessed an extra $150.00 for taking an online class. The logic is to keep it low and they will never know it. If you have taken certain business classes, then you paid hidden fees, the tuition is higher.Your student fees pays for the Advising Center. You probably did not know that years ago Student Government approved a fee to cover the cost of the center. If you have taken a science class, then you paid the lab fees. Keep it low and they will never know it. How about the student tech fee?
BTW, you even pay for text book rental. You probably thought it was free. You pay an activity fee, even though you may never attend an activity on campus.

Keep the fees low and they will never know it.

  3. LOL, They are not "hidden" if you know about them. Stop bitching and complaining. So you were given the run around in several office. That does mean the entire university is bad. Your majesty, learn to roll with the punch. Critically Pissed is just another place for you and others to escape. Do something instead of bitching. Write a letter to the Chancellor or to God but damn it, try to change thing instead of flapping your gills.

    1. I get your point Bad Prof Chaos but, what are your intentions on this blog?
Can you at least say why you have to be such a deliberate ass?
      Seriously.

      "Your majesty"
      "flapping your gills"
      "stop bitching"

No one's going to respond positively to that. That's what makes you a troll, and inherently, a low-life idiot. Your advice sucks and you know it. I'd like to know how effective you honestly think a letter would be, but I'll probably never know because you're just a bullshitter troll. Which is why I think it would be foolish for me to even respond to any of your future comments. Show me otherwise.

    2. O grasshopper, stop bitching and learn some respect. I'm not personally attacking you! But look what you're doing. "low life idiot" "bullshitter troll" "deliberate ass" I think the shoe is better worn on your foot. I wasn't so mean. I think I should now say, "it would be foolish for me to even respond to any of your future comments. Show me otherwise."

    3. Fine but your comments still make you sound like a jerk. And why don't you just give some real advice? come to think of it the chancellor has listening sessions quite often. Guess you didn't know that.. Or you'd rather just reprimand students for complaining at all in the first place. Here's my advice: to the op - I would think about attending the next listening session. Check your email for when and where the next one will be. And to bad prof chaos - I'd just stop commenting on this blog unless I had something truly helpful and effective to say.

    4. I just told you what to do:

      Go meet with the prof.
Discuss the class with him or her.

Mentioning it to the chancellor is an end run. Make an appointment with the prof first.

    5. Don't turn around and do the very thing you accuse Prof Chaos of doing. You call Prof Chaos a low lie idiot, bullshitter, troll, deliberate ass. Learn to take the high road grasshopper. Turn the other cheek, as Jesus used to say. Here is my advice - go see your prof if you have class related issues.

    6. Uhh 4:48 was not me... And I'm not sure what you're even talking about anyway... what I had in mind when I suggested the listening sessions was the extra fees for classes and being given the run around in different offices on campus.... missing a syllabus or whatever is obviously something the chancellor can't really do anything about I'm guessing.... but all you've been saying is write a letter to the chancellor...in fact, in the original comment that this thread is in response to you said, "Write a letter to the Chancellor".

  4. @Prof Chaos, don't you ever find it a little hypocritical to harass the original poster, and all of the others I've seen on here, about "bitching." All I see from you on here is "bitching." You also automatically assume that the original poster is a habitual bitcher. You don't know them. You don't know anything about them. You've read one statement by this person and automatically assumed that they constantly bitch. You also have a horrible skills in terms of arguing. Not only do you not know how to pinpoint the actual purpose of a statement/argument, but you don't know how to use evidence or fact to back it up making your argument weak and borderline worthless.

The original poster has made a valid point shared by a decent portion of students (yes I know this for a fact). College is expensive already and burying extra fees into our tuition is wrong. I always wonder what my tuition is actually being spent on if it isn't covering these extra costs. Also, all professors should be good. There are plenty of people jobless and desperate to get any teaching position available. There are probably several of them who are better than some of the professors here. It is the professors job to teach and stay updated, they get paid for it. It's pretty hard to improve in a class if you don't even know what you're doing wrong until the final exam. The argument is valid and an actual problem on campus.

    1. So what is actually a hidden fee? It is certainly not purchasing a text book. Most students are not aware that they are assessed an extra fee for taking an online class, or assessed science lab fees, or that tuition in certain classes on campus are higher. These are called hidden fees because you do not know that they are there. All colleges and universities add hidden fees. Its a slick way to increase tuition without the political fall out. State government does the same thing. They sneak in a tax hike by raising the fees on auto registration, etc. Now you have the rest of the story,

    2. And that is why you should speak with the prof. Are you afraid?

    3. But yes, to answer your original question. I do find myself to be highly hypocritical.

    4. I never said a hidden fee was paying for textbooks. Hidden fees are the extra costs for classes not covered under tuition. I also know why they have them, but it's stupid. That was my point. I'm not stupid, I know why they have all of these extra fees and I know what is getting taxed. I know all of this stuff. What I'm saying is that it's fucked up.

Also, when I have an issue with a professor, I talk to them. I have on more than one occasion taken extra time out of my day to track down a professor and ask for clarifications. However, some professors do not care. I had one professor so bad that the one time I did go to talk to her she snapped at me. She also told us she didn't take emails and she cancelled class 17 times in one semester (no exaggeration). Not all professors are willing to work with you. In fact I think some of them take their personal misfortunes out on their students. I've only encountered that one professor but I am sure there are more.

    5. Okay, here is what you wrote in your original post:

"The hidden fees that I am talking about are the fees that come once you've already handed the University your left arm and right leg. You'll get to all of your classes during the first week of the semester and your professor hands you your course syllabus and within that document are a list of books, materials, or subscriptions that you have to sign up for"

Your words, a list of books, materials, or subscriptions. These are not hidden fees. So now your response is that it is fucked up but there are lots of things in life that are fucked up. You agree?

However, you did mention that you only encountered one negative prof but you go on to say that you are sure that there are more. Perhaps so, but wait until you encounter them. You may get lucky and never encounter another negative prof.

That is my original point. A single negative prof does not imply that there are hordes of them just waiting to make your life miserable.
