Laptops in class....grrrrr (by anon)

It has come to my attention that more and more students are starting to bring their laptops to class for NON-CLASS usage! I usually do not mind because for one, I have done it a few times, but this has gotten way out of hand. Almost every time I go to my biology class, there is this kid that sits next to me that uses his laptop to go on FACEBOOK. Basically, the whole class period whether he is on facebook or other unrelated websites, he is bugging the crap out of me. I mean what is the point of coming to class if you are not going to pay attention. Oh yea, not to mention that there is no attendance policy for my biology class! I try really hard not to pay attention, but this kid is always watching random videos on his facebook or youtube which I catch on the corner of my eyes. This not only distracts me, but when he starts watching videos like NBA highlights, the next thing I know is, I'm sitting there watching it with him as well and forgetting to take notes for class. I mean COME ON! I know for a fact that students sitting behind us would probably be getting distracted too since the room is somewhat crunched. So, this message is for all you people that brings a laptop to class and is on unrelated class websites/materials!  Please for the love of God, don’t come to class because chances are you will be distracting other people. Other people that pay good money so that they can LEARN!

In conclusion, laptops used for non-class things during class are bad, so let’s go to school to learn, not distract others from learning!

  1. I have a really hard time you find it THAT distracting to have a student on a computer next to you in class. I don't suppose you find it as distracting as when someone coughs, or a phone buzzes, or someone gets up to go to the bathroom, or someone comes in late, or someone is swiveling in their chair too much, or someone is tapping their foot, or... you get the point. Which is - lots of things can be distracting in class. Someone on their computer is one of the distractions I've faced many times and it is not difficult to mind my own business and watch the professor. If you can't ignore something like a youtube video that's going on in the corner of your eye, then why don't you just six next to someone else who is not playing videos on their laptop? Seriously.

Do I think it's cool that people go to class and do nothing but look at irrelevant things online especially when they have the option to not attend? Of course not. Whoever does that is is a jackass. But I think it's tolerable.

You know its complaints like yours that lead to stupid ass classroom rules, like a rule for the whole class to not use laptops. Which is BS if you ask me. Not that I even use a laptop in class. But holy cow aren't we adults here?

    1. I agree to an extent, but I have to side with the writer. its really not the same because when people cough etc. like u mentioned those distractions are only brief ones, but when someone is on the computer it is a constant distraction! Im sure that some people are able to ignore it supposedly maybe because they just don't care, but for the people that do it is hard to pay attention when people are watching videos online. Can you honestly say that when someone is next to you doing that you don't get distracted?

    2. I get distracted by people watching videos for about as long as I get distracted by someone texting next to me, or doodling in their notebook, or digging through their backpack, or whatever it may be...
I suppose if someone had a live stream of a college basketball game on during class, in my head I'd be like, "ooh I should check this out..", but then I'd remember I was in class, and I'd say to myself, "if I want to watch the game, I'll just leave". So basically, if someone is watching something in class on their laptop that you're so interested in you can't ignore it, then maybe YOU should leave class and go watch videos. I don't know.
Regardless, since this OP is saying that students who use laptops in class are too distracting for other students, it is suggesting that a rule should be made so no students can use laptops, which would just be ridiculous and unfair, so I am against this kind of complaining, considering the student can easily avoid this on his/her own by just switching seats.

  4. This is very distracting. I never use facebook or watch videos in class. Because I don't want to distract anyone.
