Damn your cellphones and ipods! (by anon)

I would like to comment on the over abundant use of cellphones and ipods on campus. Whether it be the ipod or people texting, man its gotten a bit out of control.. Im tired of seeing the air guitar solos and hearing folks singing their favorite songs out loud..all the while, oblivious to the fact they are singing out loud..I cannot begin to count the number of close encounters I have had with students looking down into their screens, as opposed to paying attention to where they are going.. even in the hallways/stairs people are abating the flow of foot traffic because they are texting or programming their favorite song.

I know no one is going to give up texting or hand over their ipod..that is not what Im asking for ..I am asking for some courtesy..no one is waiting to see your rendition of the latest guitar riff, please stop!! You look stupid or have turrets or some other form of affliction.. American Idol has already began and you lost your shot...Save your singing for the shower!! Every once in a while, look up and watch where you are going..Better yet, take a seat, text whomever, then stand up and go on about your business..

In an age of new technology, a new set of ethics comes with it.  Please do what is ethical.  Behave as though you would hope others behave. If you dont want to be impeded by a random texter, when you're 5 minutes late to class, dont text in the hallways or on the stairs. If you pay for a ticket to a show then guitar solos are the shit, if not, leave the guitar hero at home when listening to your favorite music. Please just mouth the words and try to keep from singing them out loud!

Let’s grow with the times and create a new set of ethics that allows for all to be happy.

  1. If you got your way, more people would be unhappy than currently. Firstly I have never seen anyone air guitaring on campus, but if I did, I wouldn't care at all. I'd probably think it was funny. Also, I can't remember ever being noticeably inconvenienced by people texting on campus. And who really cares about singing out loud? Unless they're doing it in the library or some other place where you're forced to listen, it doesn't matter. So you pass someone on the way to class who's singing, big deal. It sounds like they're enjoying themselves more than you are, so don't bring them down.

Based on your use of the phrase "programming their favorite song" I'm inclined to suspect that you don't have a fantastic understanding of modern technology. Perhaps that's part of the reason for your unwarranted contempt for those who use it openly.

  2. People don't even talk to each other anymore, everyone is wearing a damn headset. I bet you not one of them is listening to a book on tape, learning a language, history, or a serious subject, just listening to Gaga. Dummies all!

  4. I concur. Many of our peers seem addicted to the use of portable devices. Indeed, the prospect of abstention therefrom discomfits many. One wonders, therefore, whether any number is actually capable of such abjuration, if only for the briefest period of time. These reflections trouble me deeply, for the devices upon which so many now depend -- devices fashioned by man for his purposes -- seem instead to have become his masters. I doubt that any good can come of this inversion of man’s proper relation to technology; I am certain, however, that many deleterious consequences follow from it -- the first of which seems to have been diminution of the linguistic faculty. One shudders to think of what passes for “conversation” in many quarters of modernity (though thankfully not all)!

    1. 'One shudders to think of what passes for “conversation” in many quarters of modernity." Yeah, you sound pretty pretentious with your unnecessary big words. One might wonder what kind of snobbery conversation one might have with you. Just saying. Who exactly are you trying to impress?

    2. Eh, just because you need a dictionary to understand what someone is saying doesn't mean that someone is merely a pretentious snob who is trying to be impressive. Maybe you just wish you had a wider vocabulary, so you could skillfully articulate your own thoughts as well.

    3. I thought I did fine articulating my thoughts. There is a difference between articulating thoughts well and articulating thoughts with a whole bunch of unnecessarily verbiage. To use unnecessary jargon is to be pretentious. You only use the big words when they are actually needed.

But I suppose you won't understand anything I just said because of the simple words I used. How inarticulate of me!

    4. Meh..all right, whatever. I still think you were being overly judgmental and quick to ridicule. Words that may seem unnecessary to one may seem to be the best fit for another.

    5. an additional note - my guess is that this particular commenter naturally infused these words into his writing. If someone was going out of his/her way to find 'big' words to use in place of ordinary language to purposely give off the impression of being linguistically talented when in actuality no such talent exists, then I'd say that's pretentious. But I don't think that's the case here. The use of what you might consider to be 'unnecessary verbiage' is not necessarily an indicator of pretentiousness.

  5. I agree to a certain extent on this argument. Although in today's society the world revolves around technology, but please, people need to know when to use these technologies(cell phones, ipods). I have ran into people during school texting walking extra slow through a door causing traffic. It gets annoying, but you cannot really do anything about it unless you cause a scene yelling at them to move it. Therefore, you pretty much just have to learn how to live with it since it will never change due to the fact that people will be people. In other words, some people will always be unethical.
