Sex = money? (by anon)

Last night I was watching the new Teen Mom 2 episode. I enjoy watching it sometimes because, let’s be honest, it makes me feel SO much better about my life and how I am glad I am not that girl. Anyways, while I was watching the show I began to notice how nice the cars were that the girls were driving. Leah has a new (I’m not sure if it’s unused or not) Ford Fusion, Jenelle has a new (again, not sure if it’s unused) Jetta with pimped out rims, and there is a scene with Chelsea talking about how she just bought a brand new Jeep Wrangler. I began thinking how just last year when these girls were new to reality tv and did not have all the fancy things they can afford now. Is it right that these girls are getting paid ridiculous amounts of money for having unsafe sex, getting pregnant, and paid for it? I don’t think so. Should we all have unprotected sex and get pregnant so we can make the big bucks too? I’m not saying I don’t sometimes enjoy watching the show, I just think it’s absurd we reward these foolish girls for their mistakes.

Legalize Marijuana! (by anon)

It truly irks me that Cannabis is not legalized already.  Before I go any further, let me just make it clear that I am not a Rasta with dreads, nor am I a stereotypical stoner.  I am simply a student that believes in the power and benefits in an herb that was put on this earth for a reason, and for our use as human inhabitants of earth.  However, I used to be against this plant and would often pass judgement of others who were open to cannabis. I have to say that the government makes it hard for anyone to have any other opinion about cannabis because of all the negative propaganda surrounding it.   I eventually opened my mind, and began to research marijuana and now my whole perspective has changed.  Here are some facts…

People around the world have been using cannabis for thousands of years.  In fact, in 1619 Jamestown, Virginia made it a requirement that anyone who owned land had to grow Marijuana.  Why is it now that the government has the right to take away a natural herb that was put here for a reason?  You don't see the DEA rushing into Granny's garden to burn her poppy plants, but if she planted a cannabis plant Granny would be in a world of trouble.

Smoking cannabis is not all it can be used for.  Hemp comes from the plant and is considered the strongest fiber in the world.  In fact, it is the reason our Declaration of Independence is still intact.  Yes, our own Decleration is on hemp paper. Contradiction? I think so.  Hemp is the strongest building material known to man and does not release the harmful gases into the air that other materials like concrete do.  The kicker in all of this is that hemp could replace everything that trees are used for.  One acre of hemp can produce as much as 7-10 acres of trees. If that doesn't make you sick then I don't know what will. I am sick and tired of hearing politicians and ignorant people bitch about how the trees are disappearing and we all need to be green.

Ironically, one of the biggest investors in the timber industry, William Hearst, is the one who exploited cannabis with his yellow journalism. Isn't that interesting? Why would one of the biggest investors of timber want cannabis to be illegal? I think I have made my point.  You can thank Hearst for deforestation.

Medical marijuana is one of the biggest reasons it should be legalized. I have watched documentary after documentary, and every patient that uses marijuana has a better value of life.  I could go on and on about different cases in which cannabis has benefited people who are suffering.    The main thing I want to get across is that I am aware marijuana can be abused and can be taken for granted by people who use it for recreational use.  However, anything can be abused; money, food, and alcohol are some examples. I definitely think that some rules and guidelines should be intact if cannabis is legalized.  But making it illegal is not the solution to anything. Cannabis is the solution.    Still not convinced then check out this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQFDUx8SsfI

I get so mad when people pass judgement on something they know nothing about.  Cannabis doesn't kill anyone.  It benefits numerous people, it can even reverse the damage of tobacco for smokers.  Yet cancer sticks are still legal.  The criminalization of cannabis is a lose-lose situation.  The government spends billions of dollars on controlling marijuana and throwing people in jail because of it.  The young adults put into jail for cannabis end up coming out of jail a real criminal, with more problems then they had before they went in.  Making cannabis illegal is like running around in circles.  88 percent of drug arrests are for simple marijuana possession.  Is anyone aware of how much it costs to keep people in jail? Its our tax dollars!   People should be outraged with this!

The government is keeping cannabis a secret simply because of dollars and cents and its pathetic.  Marijuana will be legalized someday hopefully, but it should never have been made illegal in the first place.

Truth...or something like it (by anon)

I believe we are pragmatic creatures and if it works to call something "true", then we'll call it true. When that truth stops working for us, we'll stop calling it true. So, "truth" changes. It evolves. It comes and goes. We create it, control it, and use it. As far as one, absolute, undying, and unchanging truth that exists outside of ourselves, as we define it - well, we sure could come up with something, but are any of us really in a position to claim that absolute truth exists in the first place, let alone claim what that truth is?

One may say 1+1=2 is an absolute, undying truth, but the only reason this is considered “knowledge” is because we say it is so. We have constructed it mathematically and linguistically purposely to describe the world as we sense it. We created it out of experience and necessity for math, and we can destroy it if we want to.

My understanding is that we create and destroy truth/knowledge based on world experience and out of the desire to explain it for practical purposes (like to predict the weather, or simply satisfy our curiosity, for example) whether they be physical, mental, spiritual, or whatever. Questions like, "is X really true?" or, "does X really depict reality?" are only meaningful in so far as they are practically effective and possible to answer. It is pointless to question whether or not something is absolutely true (or to ask if I really exist, what a cloud really is, and other dumb questions), since we cannot know whether or not anything is absolutely true beyond what we have constructed to be true (such as 1+1=2), thus it is practically meaningless to think or talk about absolute truth at all. So I say we drop the idea and stay on this planet, working on practical truths (although speculating about impractical truths can be amusing).

To recap here - truth is made up out of practical necessity. We take the world and our experience of it, and we try to uncover the “truth”, but we don’t realize that we will always be the ones to decide what truth is in the first place, and in the long run, it really doesn’t matter, as long as it works. When we think a lot about questions like, “what is truth?”, we’re playing games with ourselves, and tricking ourselves into thinking truth is a thing that exists before us, when it’s just a description we made up in the first place for practical purposes (“if it is true that this is a rotting apple, I will not eat it”), but for whatever reason, people want to take it further than that. If you’re thinking of asking, “but how do you know?” regarding anything I’ve said here, then you don’t get it, because knowing involves truth and justification, and we just don’t have the means to objectively gauge either of those things, because they are subjectively manifested and dependent on us, the creators. The deciders. Truth is constructed and used in many different ways for many different purposes, and it is created and destroyed all of the time. This is where I decide to lay my blanket of truth, where you lay yours depends on your perspective, and whether or not it works for you. We cannot discover it - we can only create, allocate, and destroy it.

Whitewater and its people suck (by anon)

I’m sorry but this town + its people have absolutely nothing worthwhile to offer (drinking notwithstanding) since you can do that anywhere.  Here are my reasons:

The cuisine here is nothing short of cheap garbagio. In fact, this I would say is the college to go if you want to learn how to cook. What? You are going throw Rosa’s pizza, and the Tokyo restaurant at me? Are you kidding me? That is all Whitewater has to offer? There is no upscale or nice sit-down restaurant . The majority of the shitty food is either fast-food or what is known as something semi-above like Subway or Culvers. No wonder why people are gaining weight here. The food is not nutritious and is low in quality and Esker just is not going to cut it as they think Italian beef is just cut-up hamburger meet with banana peppers DISGUSTING!

The movie theater is so very seedy. I wouldn’t pay five dollars to go there next time. The sound system is outdated, and the seats are so uncomfortable that I could not sit still at all.

What type of leisure activities or sites of attraction does Whitewater have to offer? It is quite pathetic. Whitewater has a center for tourism in the downtown area. What is its function in the community? What can they possibly do? Whitewater is the absence of tourism; I think if Wisconsin wants to save money they should weed out do for nothing jobs like this since surely the heads of these offices are being subsidized by the government.

The post office of Whitewater is quite possibly one of the absolute  worst mail distributing centers I’ve ever been to. I’ve been harassed several times by the front-desk clerks. They told me they could not weigh my packages since I need to buy one of the scales they sell for a lucrative sum of $40. The lady (let’s call her tattooed hag bitchface) would not let me mail my package since I had a small hole in it. I said this was fine and I asked to use some of their mailing tape so I could patch the “small and insignificant hole.” She told me I could not use them as that was for strictly priority mail. I would have to spend more money just to use their “special tape.” I said ok. I spotted some scotch tape near the desk and politely asked if I could barrow that. She said no! I asked her why is it that whenever I come in she always gives me a hard time. Then to my astonishment, she even told me “She was a bitch.” To which I replied I was thinking of another word.

Last but not least, the college kids at this University are some of the most rude, obnoxious, egotistical, and any other vice I could think of. For example,  there was this kid that I asked if he was in my Linear Algebra class and he said no when clearly he was. He was being a jackass for no reason.  I overheard some ditsy girls talking about their sex-life openly and then proceeding to announce that they kicked out an “ugly dude” at the party and  proceeded to laugh about it!

Last but not least, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The problem is not the teaching actually. The environment is what makes this school insufferable. Most of the college populous are going to college for the wrong reasons. Maybe this is more widespread than just whitewater. However, the people I encounter are so one-dimensional that I cannot start a conversation with them at all and ever. I do not want to talk about the Green  Bay Packers, how much you drank last night, your sex life, etc…. it’s like the people who are friends are really friends with themselves. It reminds me of the t.v. show “king of the Hill,” where they are just standing in front of the fence and drinking and talking about nothing intelligent or of importance really. I really mean it. Chances are, if I run onto you on campus I will immediately hate you.

Anyone else want to add to this list? This is what stands out so far for me. I’m sure there are at least 20 more reasons that are eluding me at the moment.

How many ways can I say the same thing? (by anon)

Let's see how many different ways I can say the same thing

1. If by living forever we mean a feeling of timelessness we must get used to living in the present.

-Ludwig Wittgenstein

2. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.

-Jesus Christ

3. Try to worry about the here and now, the future will take care of itself somehow.

-"Life in One Day"

4. The past is just memories; the future is just what we expect to happen. There really is only now.

-I forgot who said that one, actually

Do you get the point? Live in the present. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is always coming but never comes.

Ron Paul is a goon - yeah, take that you blind followers! (by twistersister)

I don't get Ron Paul.

Actually, scratch that: I don't understand the considerable support he has from the young, internet-savvy crowd that I tend to hang around.

I won't even touch the fact that many of his policies are incredibly nonviable on a political level, the allegations of racism, or that he apparently thinks the south was the "right" side of the Civil War (seriously, I won't touch them.  Look them up and judge for yourselves; I don't want to be accused of intentionally coloring your opinions for my own dastardly purposes or whatever.  I mean, I totally just did that by mentioning them at all, but yeah.  Whatever, get over it).

No, the Ron Paul policy that sticks out to me is his stance on same-sex marriage (which is of course a whole lot better than that of his "competition," most of whom are far, far too blusteringly insane for me to even bother criticizing!).  His stance, in short, is that "the states should decide."

This strikes me as a really serious and blatant sidestepping of an important issue, but for some reason it doesn't get too much attention.  Why?  Like, I know people who verifiably support same-sex marriage, and either don't notice or don't care that Ron Paul essentially believes that taking rights away from homosexuals is fine so long as his government of choice is the one that's doing it.

What strikes me hardest about this is the sheer mindlessness of it.  It's like Paul isn't interested in actually making direct contributions to the country's present well-being... just in promoting an ideal.  And considering how documentedly unelectable he's been throughout the years, that's kind of a "duh"-- many of the people who throw their weight behind Ron Paul are less interested in the Ron Paul gestalt than they are in the philosophy he represents.  But that doesn't explain the people who are legitimately interested in seeing Ron Paul become president.  Why have I read Facebook comments from intelligent people who explicit dismiss accusations of Paul's racism as "not important" (but not "untrue")?  Why does any intelligent, socially-conscious person think of him as an even remotely desirable candidate?

Anyone?
