Professors, practice what you preach (by anon)

Does it bother anyone else that professors will constantly spell things wrong and make grammar mistakes, but when you do the same you’re downgraded?  Does that just seem completely unfair?  I think so.  Constantly when the syllabus is handed out in a class the teacher must correct at least a few things that have been mistakes.  But, you write a paper with a few mistakes and you go from an A to a B, what’s up with that?  They tell us to proofread, but yet it does not seem like they practice what they preach.  Professors shouldn’t downgrade a student for what they as well make mistakes in.  Maybe professors should be docked pay for their grammar mistakes as we are docked points.  Fair is fair.

  1. "Do as I say, not as I do." It really just comes down to that phrase. While it may seem unfair, you are here to learn and better yourself. They are here to help you with that. If they didn't downgrade you for those errors, then they would be doing their job and teaching. Part of learning is making mistakes. I'd be more upset if they weren't catching my errors and instead I end up making that same mistake for the rest of my career or even my life.

  2. You missed a comma there, after, "Constantly."

Who is in college to be taught and assessed? If there was a rubric for syllabi, I could think of many errors more egregious than misspelling.

Suck it up. Try to spend the next four years growing a sense of humor and of perspective. Remember that it will be you filling out job apps to be judged for spelling and grammar. Your professor already has a gig.

  3. Speaking of mistakes, as the poster of Anon 11:02 as it should be "If they didn't downgrade for those errors, then they WOULD NOT be doing their job and teaching us."

  4. I TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!! They are totally two-faced when they do that. Maybe they should go back to school to write better.

  5. Don't sweat the small stuff. You are sweating small stuff instead of being thankful you have the opportunity to attend this university. You are white (for the most part) and privileged. Many people are less fortunate than you and all you can think about are mistakes on syllabi. A winner (like 9/4, 1102 and 1120) would learn from the mistakes, not try to make fun of the prof. A loser sits back and points fingers. Be a winner!

  6. I've had professors reduce my grade for not attending all of their classes, when they've cancelled class more times than I have skipped. It's infuriating! It's hard to take a professor seriously when they don't set an example for what they want.

    1. Ah, yeah, that's pretty shitty. I feel like those professors should be named here to discourage that kind of practice. I'm not sure that's allowed though.

  7. Name them. It makes not difference to the profs. They could give a shit. They are getting paid. Face the fact. You are a student and do not have the juice. The prof has the juice. So stop thinking that life is fair. Shut your mouth, stop crying, and do your best regardless of the mistakes made by your profs. One day, if you stop crying, you may have the juice.
