Every professor I
have constantly complains about students not coming to class. Don’t
professors understand that this is college and students have the freedom to
choose whether we want to come to class or not? I understand that
professors want to teach to large number of students but if only half of the
students show up for class then it’s the students fault. Not like the
professors are being paid by the number of students that show up to class every
day. The students have already paid for their education and if they miss
half of the classes then it’s their own fault and their waste of money.
Therefore, the professors should give extra credit for the students that
do come to class every day.
And this you kids are known as the entitlement generation
ReplyDeleteYeah, we're entitled to free will...
Deleteextra credit for actually showing up for class? should you get a big wet sloppy kiss because you finished your milk too?
ReplyDeleteHey, that's great. Profs don't want unprepared students messing up their classes in the first place, so they don't care if students cut class and remain at home sucking beer and eating pizzas, but these same dummies will show up and evaluate the profs negatively because they did not learn anything but they did not come to class and then they cry like little babies and blame the profs for their failures. So if you do not come to class, don't evaluate the profs and furthermore accept your failing grades. Just suck mo beer and eat mo pizza. Your job at Pizza Hut will be held for you.
ReplyDeleteyou mean the other way around. professors are drinking there beer and eating there pizza as they mooch off the system.
DeleteAnon 11:22 - don't speak for students on this blog until you can use the correct "their" in your sentences. Jeez.
DeleteAnyway, one reason why professors giving extra credit to students for having a great attendance record could be so that all students are encouraged to attend. Many professors do it the other way around and threaten to take down a letter grade if students miss three or more class periods, as a way of encouragement, and this is bad for those of us who have personal reasons for being absent (but must take it as an unexcused absence) but who pick up the slack by reading material, visiting professors during office hours, collaborating with other students, etc. to make up the work and maintain a good grade.
It seems as though there is something wrong with the professor evaluation system. Perhaps there is too much riding on it and professors are worried that students who fail due to poor attendance will blame it on the professor. Well, the solution is not for professors to make attendance mandatory, in which a student's grade depends heavily on the number of classes he/she attends. Professors should still take attendance as a way to chart grades and attendance. A positive correllation would imply that the professor has done his/her job well, as those students who showed up regularly, got better grades than those who didn't.
I go to class everyday and I don't expect extra credit. If you don't go to class then fine, just don't complain if you get a lower grade and the professor won't let you have an easy extra credit assignment.
